Q: Meeting Fire Safety Standards
I have just invested in a property and want to make sure it means fire safety standards - what should I do?
A:
I strongly recommend reading through the Fire Safety Regulations guide as this will give you a detailed outline on what you will need to do in regards to furniture and furnishings.
To give you a few pointers to begin with:
- It is important that your property has got several means of fire escape, especially on the first floor.
Ideally the windows in bedroom should have a bottom or side opening that is large enough for your tenant to escape through. However to be on the safe side I would recommend making sure all your windows can do this.
- All of your fittings should be checked and tested by a qualified inspector before your tenant moves in to remove the risk of electrical fault and fires. Replace anything that looks faulty
- Most electrical and gas devices come with labels containing safety instructions. Leave these on.
